PC-12 engine oil is API’s next-generation heavy-duty diesel engine oil standard, built to support EPA and CARB emissions mandates taking effect with 2027 model-year engines. CK-4 and FA-4 have served the industry well since 2016, but they were designed around the performance expectations of that era.
The 2027 engine hardware features more advanced aftertreatment systems, tighter NOx limits, and expanded operating ranges, so it needs oil that does more. That’s what PC-12 is built for. According to API’s EOLCS update from April 2026, the specification targets improved oxidation resistance, enhanced wear protection, expanded elastomer compatibility, and better aftertreatment system protection across the board.

For most fleets running mixed model years, CL-4 is the right call — at least to start. It’s fully backward compatible with engines currently running CK-4, CJ-4, and even CH-4, which means it’ll work across a range of truck vintages without compatibility concerns.
FB-4 is more limited. Like FA-4 before it, FB-4 is application-specific: intended for engines that manufacturers have specifically engineered and approved for lower-viscosity operation. According to a 2026 Fleet Equipment Magazine Q&A with API, FB-4 will likely appear as a factory fill in some 2027 model-year trucks, but not all manufacturers will adopt it immediately, and using it outside of OEM-approved applications isn't recommended.

CL-4 is the safe operational default for mixed fleets. If your equipment spans multiple model years, CL-4’s backward compatibility means you can run a single oil across your operation without having to sort by vintage or worry about cross-contamination risk between categories.
The harder challenge is operational. As TTNews reported in April 2026 on fleet PC-12 preparation, industry experience from previous API transitions shows the most common mistakes aren’t formulation related. They’re things like mislabeled bulk tanks, cross-contamination during top-offs, and technicians who haven’t been briefed on the new categories. Those mistakes are preventable, but only if you plan for them in advance.
For fleets that will eventually run both CL-4 and FB-4 equipment side by side, the labeling issue is especially important. Using FB-4 in a CK-4-era engine isn’t a catastrophic event in most cases, but it’s not the intended application. A misapplication can add up over time in ways that may not show up until your next oil analysis.

As Truck News reported in their 2025 coverage of the PC-12 development process, the phase-out will happen naturally as manufacturers sell through existing inventory and shift production to the new categories. The same pattern played out when CK-4 replaced CJ-4 in 2016. It took time, and there was no hard cutoff date for legacy products.
